Redesign an old saree
I always prefer to redesign an old saree, instead of making it gown, skirt or curtains etc. For an Indian woman, saree is not just a piece of cloth. It has many emotions and memories attached to it. But while redesigning an old saree, we need to consider some points.
- First check whether the saree is strong enough to hold embroidery or any other embellishments. Some sarees tear is it is old.
- Redesigning an old silk saree can be a creative and fulfilling project. The redesigned saree will be very fashionable.

Remember to carefully plan your design, taking into account the saree’s color, pattern, and fabric. Sketch out your ideas before starting, and if you’re not confident in your sewing skills, consider consulting a professional tailor or designer to ensure the best results. With a little creativity and effort, you can breathe new life into your old silk saree and create a fashion-forward piece that suits your style.

There are many options available in the market for embellishments and readymade borders are available. I have redesigned many sarees with Banarasi borders.
In this post I am sharing the saree redesigned with plain raw silk material.
Here is the saree I chose to redesign.
This is an old silk saree, I guess it is a soft silk. I checked the saree, the border and the body were good. But the pallu was not good. It was torn in some places. I could attached same colored fabric to it as pallu. But I wanted to change the color combination too. So I selected pure raw silk plain material and brocade fabric.
The redesigned saree:
On lower border I have attached raw silk plain border.
On the upper side , I have attached broad brocade border. Along both the borders , I have attached a small border.
To give a different and classy look to the body fabric, I have done running stitch with sequins.
This is how it looks when worn:
So with simple techniques also we can make the saree look very fresh, new and a designer one :). I have also shared video of the process of redesigning it.
