Block printing on a T-shirt
I love to design kid’s dress. Recently designed a frock with tatted lace. This is also for a kid, and this one I have designed using bock printing technique. Block printing on fabric is a traditional technique that involves using carved blocks to apply ink or dye onto textiles. It’s a versatile and artistic method that has been used for centuries in various cultures around the world.
In India this block printing techniques are widely used. There are several kinds of block printing techniques. Some famous block printing techniques used in India are
Bagru Printing
- Origin: Bagru, Rajasthan.
- Characteristics: Known for its use of natural dyes and traditional patterns, such as floral and geometric designs. Bagru printing often uses indigo and other natural colors.
Sanganeri Printing
- Origin: Sanganer, Rajasthan.
- Characteristics: Known for its delicate and detailed floral patterns. Sanganeri prints often feature intricate designs with fine lines and are usually done in bright, vibrant colors.
Kalamkari Printing
- Origin: Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
- Characteristics: Kalamkari, which means “pen craft,” involves hand-painting or block-printing with intricate mythological and religious themes. The prints are often elaborate and detailed.
Ajrakh Printing
- Origin: Kutch, Gujarat.
- Characteristics: Ajrakh is known for its complex geometric patterns and rich, deep colors. The process involves multiple stages of dyeing and printing.
Dabu Printing
- Origin: Rajasthan.
- Characteristics: Dabu printing involves a resist technique where clay and other natural materials are used to create patterns. The result is a textured, rustic look.
Chhipa Printing
- Origin: Rajasthan.
- Characteristics: Known for its vibrant colors and simple patterns, often involving hand-carved blocks.
The wooden blocks are available easily in the craft market now. I have used such blocks.

Here I have used blocks in 4 designs.
On edge of the T-shirt, I have used three block designs. The two at the ends are of grass designs, and the deer design and the tree.
And on the upper side of the T-shirt I have used bird design:
