Foamiran flowers- A brief tutorial

Flower making is very well known craft. Flowers can be made in different materials and media. Whether crafty person or not, most of us know how to make flower from paper at least. Nearly 30 years ago I had learnt to make flowers from satin and velvet cloth. I don’t have the cuttings of those flower pattern now, but I still remember the method of making the flowers. We had learnt to make Hibiscus , Rose , Jasmine etc.

Foamiran Flowers:

Now many kinds of media/ materials are used for flower making. I love making flowers using clay, and polymer clay. Air dry clay is a good medium. But making of flowers from air dry clay is time consuming.Making flower using  Polymer clay takes less time, but it needs baking. Nowadays making flowers using foamiran sheets in trend.

What is Foamiran sheet?

These are thin foams available in different colors. One can buy these from craft shops, online too. These can be colored using oil pastels.

Many kinds of flowers can be made using foamarin sheets. I have tried to make some simple flowers:

Materials required:

Foamiran sheets ( I have used different colors)

Oil pastel colors

Iron box

Glitters

Glue( You can use glue gun if you have)

How to make foamiran flowers:

First cut the pattern of the flower petals on a thick paper. I have taken 4 sizes of the petals. The number of petals depends on the type of the flower. Place the pattern on the foamiran sheet , mark and cut the foamiran sheets, into petal shape.

Now give zigzag cut at the edges of the petal:

Shade the edges , if required , with oil pastels

Shade the edges with required colors, with dabbers

Shade the centre with green color

Now heat the iron, and place the petal on the iron for 2-3 seconds:

Place it on medium heated iron

Immediately squeeze the petals to create creases at the edges:

After few minutes, open the petals and attach it one above the other petals using glue. The biggest petal at the bottom and smallest at the top:

Take a small strip of half inch foamiran sheet, shade it with green color.Give small cuts at the one side of the strip. Keep this on heated iron box for 2-3 seconds and roll and squeeze it.

Now attach this , in the centre part of the flower made:

Apply glue in small quantity and  sprinkle  glitters on the petals.

These foamiran flowers can be used to make jewels or any other decoration. This year I had sent Rakhees, made using foamiran flowers to my brothers.  🙂
