Krishna Stories weaved – Baluchari sarees
Baluchari sarees are very elegant sarees. These are actually the pride of West Bengal (India). Because these sarees are weaved in a small village called Baluchar in West Bengal. The special weaving technique of Baluchari sarees originates from Bangladesh. Nawab of Bengal brought this technique and patronized this weaving form. The specialty of this saree is, the mythological stories are weaved on the saree. It is like wearing a story 🙂
I will write about more about Baluchari sarees, in coming posts. Today is Krishna Janmashtami, celebrated in India. Many arts and crafts are influenced by God Shree Krishna. Baluchari sarees are not exception. You find many sarees with Krishna stories weaved on Pallu and border. Here I am sharing some.
Stories of Krishna weaved on Baluchari sarees:
The first one is also called Swarnachari, as it contains Gold thread weaving. The pallu looks like this:
This saree has the Radha Krishna story weaved on it. There are 6 rows. The first and last three rows have same design. The row in the middle , has the weaving of Radha and Krishna together.
The first row has the scene of Krishna plying flute and Radha listening to that. Second row has the weaving of Krishna and Radha on a swing.
The middle row has bigger motif than the rest of the rows. It has Krishna and Radha together.
The border too has the similar designs.
This baluchari saree has small motifs of Krishna design woven all over the saree:
The next Baluchari saree and another story of Krishna .
The second row has the story of Shri Krishna preaching Bhagvatgeeta to Arjuna.
This Baluchari saree has, Krishna’s childhood stories. The top two and bottom two rows are weaved with the motifs of Gopikas complaining about Krishna, with Yashodha.
The middle row has the motif, Yashodha punishing Krishna. So beautifully woven, I feel even expression on the face are seen.
When a Baluchari saree is worn, we wear the culture, story and the elegancy. Baluchari is a must in any saree lover’s wardrobe. 🙂
