Kutch embroidery
Gujarath state has contributed a lot to Indian traditional embroidery.One of the famous among Indian traditional embroideries is Kutch embroidery, was introduced by “Kathi”, people of Gujarath. Kutch embroidery is attractive form of embroidery. There are several kinds in Kutch embroidery. The one is prominently known as Sindhi work in India, is a type of Kutch work, where interlacing technique is used. This is also known as “Sindhi Taropa”.
I have already shared,some of my works using Kutch embroidery. Also you can find some embroidery designs, for Kutch embroidery in previous posts. As per requests from many readers, I am sharing tutorial of Kutch work.
Tutorial of Kutch work
In Kutchwork movement of the needle is very important.The embroidery involves two steps. In the first step, the base or frame is made and in the second a long thread is interlaced.
The basic frame is made of squares. The below pictures shows the movement of needle to form the base. From point number 1 , the needle is pierced from the other side of the cloth first.
After making the frame , the thread is interlaced. while interlacing the thread , the needle is reversed.
There are two techniques in making the frame. Each technique gives different finishing and look to the embroidery. Here are the embroideries made using the two techniques:

Beautiful Ranjana! My aunt was adept at embroidery. As a child, I used to be in awe of her works. I used to touch, feel the thread…the colourful threads and patterns were so catchy. Now is taken ill and can’t do it anymore.
