Pichwai painting – The art I learnt
This Pichwai painting I started learning few months back. This took quite sometime for me. But I am happy that, I learnt a lot. And the process was very soothing. I am also happy with the outcome too.
Here is the painting:
What is Pichwai painting?
Pichwai painting is a traditional form of art that originated in the town of Nathdwara in Rajasthan, India. It is a style of painting that is deeply rooted in the culture and religious traditions of the Pushtimarg sect of Vaishnavism, which worships Lord Krishna.
The word “Pichwai” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Pichh” meaning back, and “Wai” meaning textile hanging. Pichwai paintings are typically large-sized cloth or paper paintings that depict various scenes from the life of Lord Krishna, particularly his childhood and his interactions with the Gopis .
Pichwai paintings are characterized by their vibrant colors, intricate detailing, and the use of gold and silver embellishments. They are usually executed with great precision and attention to detail. The subjects of Pichwai paintings include Krishna playing the flute, Krishna with his cowherd friends, Krishna with Radha, and various other scenes from Krishna’s life and legends.
These paintings were originally created as backdrops for the Srinathji temple in Nathdwara and were used to decorate the shrine during festivals and other auspicious occasions. They were designed to enhance the devotion and aesthetic experience of the devotees.
The one I painted is of Radha Krishna painting. Normally Pichwai paintings are on the themes of Radha Krishna . The closer view of the main figure:
You can see the intricate work of the painting. The pallu, the ornaments, the design on the fabric and the shading. No wonder this takes time to paint Pichwai painting.
Pichwai paintings are highly regarded as an important form of religious and artistic expression. They have gained recognition beyond the religious context and are now appreciated as a unique and exquisite form of Indian art. Today, Pichwai paintings are sought after by art collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
I am painting one more Pichwai soon, under the guidance of my teacher. This time I am selecting Krishna’s childhood theme. Soon to share the process also the painting with you all.
Until then,
Love, Laugh and Live the life to the fullest,
