Stone work of Odissa- Pathar Kaam
Last week I had shared about stone carvings of Rajasthan. Availability of stones and kinds of the stones available at a place have great influence on the carving styles. Then the culture of the place also has effect on any art form. In Rajasthan wood working as well as stone carving has influence of Mughal art.So we can see Jaal carving in sone carvings of Rajasthan. In Odisha the stone carving is used for making mainly idols Gods and Goddesses.
The stone carving in Odisha is practiced by Shilpakar community, but now other people are also learning and practicing the art of stone carving. Here are some of the stone carving works of Odisha, which I could click during my visit to an exhibition.Visiting Odisha in my bucket list. I will definitely visit the place where the stone carving is done.
There are many small and big idols. With stone idols of Hindu deities , there are idols of Buddha too.
And what attracted me was stone carving of Puri Jagannath Temple.
The Sun temple situated in Konark of Odisha is an example of rich heritage stone carving of Odisha. Now because of scarcity of stones and cost, have made the artisans look for other alternatives, like metal and clay. Hope this art of stone carving doesn’t perish with the time.
