Thewa Jewels – Gold work on colored glass
Thewa is handcrafted jewelry from Rajasthan. This is also a kind of enameling like Meenakari, but the enamel looks like it is done superficially. Silver frame of design is covered with delicate gold leaf and enameled on a colored glass.
Origin of Thewa:
This craft originated in Deolia , a small place in the district Chattisgarh. The process was invented by Shri Nathuji Soni and passed on to his the next generations. The thewa artists are known as Rajsonis.
The design:
The motifs used in Thewa reflect the lifestyles of kings, animals, peacock and flowers and vine designs. These also include Maharana Pratap , riding his horse Chetak, soldiers , Krishna and Gopis etc. Here are some designs of thewa:
