Transformation of art- Zari work of Gujarat
Zari is part of Indian embroidery from historical time. When I visited a royal museum in Jaipur, there were many dresses of royal families , which had intricate zari embroidery. Prior to embroidery machine, the embroidery made using zari. The hand embroidery made with very thin crochet needle is called Zardozi in Northern part of India. And in Southern part of India it is known as Aari work.
Gujarat, is one of the major states in manufacturing of zari. Zari is made using cotton or silk thread with gold , copper or silver polish on that.
After the discovery of embroidery machine, people started using zari for the embroidery. A small piece of embroidery which would take days to complete, can be done in minutes. This has led to manufacture many decorative items, like bed sheets, pillow covers and wall panels made of zari embroidery.
Here are glimpses of such decorative zari craft
